2017 SCYA Midwinters

Eleven star boats gathered for the 88th edition of this annual Southern California tradition hosted by Cal YC. Back in the days when no one sailed in the winter time, this was always a “must do” event. In fact the star class was recognized as the longest continually sailed one design class in SCYA Midwinters history and sails for the Frank Borzage Perpetual Trophy (pictured above), which was first awarded in 1930!

Cool temps (at least for SoCal), choppy seas, and a big west swell greeted sailors out on Santa Monica Bay for Saturday’s three scheduled races. The day started light and flukey but filled in to 10-12 knots by the later part of the third race. The hard working Cal YC race committee volunteers did a great job of running three classes on one course in challenging conditions. Day one saw locals Alejandro Bugacov and Eugenio Cingolani leading with firsts in races two and three.

With less wind and warm sunny skies, Sunday looked more like Southern California at its best. Clear skies allowed racers to view snowcapped mountains and clearly see the Hollywood sign from the race course!! It was such a beautiful day that Japanese Prime Minister Abe came to Cal YC cheer on his man Isao Toyoma!!

The Cal YC Race Committee had to postpone for close to an hour before finally commencing race four in a light southeasterly. The wind remained steady enough to crank out two windward-leeward two-lappers and Chuck Driscoll and Jim Oberg from SDYC showed some serious pace winning both races! With two seconds, Nick Madigan and crew David Wood from NHYC were able to take the lead for the series win. Our Argentinian friends were second and exalted grand master Doug Steele and crew Erick Lange were third.

As usual Cal Yacht Club members were impeccable hosts with their traditional beer at the hoist and great food for all the sailors. Regatta Chairs Tawni Schutter & Chris Calingaert and a large team of volunteers are to be commended for their great regatta organization. We cannot wait to come back for some more star sailing on Sana Monica Bay!
