Seneca Lake, New York provided an excellent test of tactical sailing on Saturday with three races sailed in shifty winds of SSE 6-10 knots. In Saturdays racing Arthur Anosov and Dave gave a textbook demonstration of concentration and boatspeed to use a lane off the start and find clear winds to the first mark. Also racing well was Rick Burgess and his novice crew Josh who played the tricky shifts to position themselves in the top group in each race. Sunday started with rain and light winds but the skies eventually cleared and winds settled in the 15-18 range. Many stuck their heads out to find the conditions trying and hurried back to the club. Given the tradition of this event to use the members' chili as a draw, those that returned to the dock early were hoping for an quick opening of the kitchen. The single race on Sunday turned out to be sailed in the best conditions found on Seneca Lake. South winds allowing big waves for exciting running. Arthur used good boatspeed to get to the first mark and made no mistakes on the jibes to win his fourth in a row. Great sailing by Arthur and Dave. Will Hendershot overcame a rigging breakdown in the first race Saturday to post a solid third. The Seneca Lake club had proved many years of great regattas due to the members getting involved with race committee work and organization. Special thanks go to Bob Westcott for his race management again and again. |
