From The Log.com: Star sailors from around the world - including 11 competitors from Southern California - converged on San Francisco Bay October 15 and 16 to compete in the Star Pacific Coast Championships (PCC), hosted by San Francisco Yacht Club. Competition was fierce with a list of competitors that read like a who’s-who in racing: two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Mark Reynolds; two-time world champion Xavier Rohart (France) and his crew of bronze medalist and current world champion Rambeau Pascal; George Szabo and crew Eric Monroe, two-time and present North American champion; Andy Horton and crew Brad Nichol, 2005 Olympic Class Regatta champ; and the up-and-coming Erik Lidecis of Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club and Mike Marzahl of Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club, who recently took fourth overall in the North Americans. The PCCs are the first of three qualifying events needed to earn a slot on the Star US Sailing team for 2006. The other two qualifying events are the Bob Levin Memorial and the Olympic Class Regattas (OCR), both to be held in Miami in January. These events will push the five best Star teams to the top to be selected for the 2006 US Star Sailing team. Only two of these teams will be invited to race in the first pre-Olympic test regatta in Qingdao, China in preparation for the 2008 Olympics. On October 15, southwest winds held steady at 14- to 16-knots with the “normal” bay chop during the first race. But in the second race, things got very tricky. “The fleet was heading to the windward mark and the wind dropped from 14 to 0 knots in a split second,” Nichol, of Lake Champlain Yacht Club, said. “We went through a 70-degree wind shift and Rohart caught it just right and moved up from 12th to fifth.” According to the competitors, the racing was tight the entire weekend, with crowding at the marks and jostling at the starts, according to one. Two races were held on Saturday and three on Sunday. They consisted of short windward/leeward courses with Xavier Rohart and Rambeau Pascal of France besting the fleet of 23 and taking first by only one point over Horton and Nichol, who earned second. Nudged into third place were Mark Reynolds and Hal Haenel of San Diego Yacht Club. This team hadn’t sailed together since winning the gold in the 1988 Olympics. Fourth position went to Peter Conde and Andrew Hunn of Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, Australia and fifth was taken by Steven Kelly and Bill Holowesko of Nassau, Bahamas. “All the good guys were there and the racing was tight all weekend,” Nichol said. |
