2005 Fort Myers Regatta

Report by John Chiarella

: Six boats showed up for the 2nd annual Fort Myers Regatta. It was a great regatta and hospitality of the Royal Palm YC was superb. The RC was chaired by my dear friend Joe Carroll. The races were sailed in the Caloosahatchee River right in front of Club.

The first race started out with the boats splitting sides of the course. At the weather mark John Vanderhoff with his grandson Craig crewing got the lead and kept on stretching it out. John Chiarella with Bob Carlson crewing was second and held on to finish just ahead of Gary MacDonald and Rob Bowers. The second race on Saturday the wind let up a little and was a bit shifty. John Vanderhoff was first followed by Gary MacDonald and John Chiarella 3rd after a intense tacking duel with Bob Van Wagnan.

The race on Sunday was sailed in a 10 to 15 knot Southeasterly. At the first mark John Vanderhoff and grandson Craig rounded just behind John Chiarella and Bob Carlson. John Vanderhoff went right and gained enough to edge ahead and be able to cover until the finish. John Chiarella fell back to 4th then at the 4th mark got inside to pass Harry Walker with Chris Rodgers crewing and Bob Van Wagnan.
