SSYC RACE WEEKEND Wilmette, IL July 25,26,27, 2003 The 2003 Sheridan Shore Yacht Club Race Weekend Regatta was hosted by the Wilmette Harbor Fleet on July 25-27. This event has been held annually since 1934, and is a Star Class sanctioned “C” event. Sixteen sailors from 6 fleets entered this year’s event. John MacCausland traveled over 800 miles from New Jersey, and gave the midwest guys a good benchmark for improvement. The first race was sailed in 10-18 knots of wind, with oscillating shifts. MacCausland and crew Brad Nichol from Lake Sunapee fleet won with Bill Allen/Brad Lichter edging Rob Maine/Kevin Murphy for second. The wind increased as the day wore on, giving a hint of things to come. The second day saw 20-25 knots of breeze, a true Lake Michigan “Southwester.” Several boats broke down and others chose not to risk equipment with the districts the following week. Those brave (or foolhardy) folks who ventured out had some amazing rides, and hopefully not too many blown out sails. John MacCausland led wire to wire in race 2, with Rob Maine and Hyde Perce battling for second. Maine/Murphy prevailed, with Perce/Nevel taking 3rd. In race 3, Tom Londrigan and Chris Wallner from Lake Springfield played the shifts well and led at the first mark. MacCausland/Nichol passed them on the first reach and pulled away for another win. Londrigan held on to 2nd, with Perce/Nevel taking another 3rd. Our format for the regatta is 4 races, with a throwout if all are sailed. This encourages those who cannot sail Friday to come and still be in the hunt for series awards. After 3 races, John MacCausland had wrapped up the series but there was a virtual 3-way tie for second. The 4th race was sailed in 8-10 knots from the opposite direction – NE. Again, MacCausland/Nichol took the gun. Ross Adams and Stuart Schmidt-Hall sailed a strong race and finished 2nd. In the race for series 2nd, Allen/Lichter played a favorable shift on the second beat and held on for 3rd in the race and series 2nd. Maine/Murphy finished tied for 2nd, but ended up 3rd by virtue of the finish of the last race. Perce/Nevel were 1 point back in fourth. A highlight of the weekend was Rob Maine’s annual race weekend party. This year’s event resembled a day care, with all the recent additions to sailor’s families; and several more on the way for next year |
