Ben Cesare and Peter Manion Win 2003 Bedford Pitcher Regatta Cedar Point Yacht Club Westport, CT September 13-14, 2003 By Nelson Stephenson Ben Cesare and Peter Manion of the Mid-Connecticut Star Fleet (MID) bested the field of 19 Stars on Sunday with 10 points in the only three races completed for the 2003 Bedford Pitcher Regatta hosted by Cedar Point Yacht Club. Second place went to Doug and Bob Schofield from Annapolis who finished with 14 points. Third was Josh Phypers and Dave Timberlake with 15 points. Bill Watson, CLIS Fleet Captain, won the Masters Division, Guy Gurney (CLIS ) won the Grand Masters Division, Jack Button (MID) won the Exalted Grand Masters Division and Charles Correll (MID) won the Venerable Grand Masters Division. While this was to be a two-day, five race, event, all Star racing was abandoned on Saturday. Racing started in winds of 26 knots with gusts to 32 knots but unfortunately the upwind and reach marks were lifted and dragging in heavy wind and tide. However, the boats which ventured out had a good time on the return trip into the Club planing down some really nice waves. Sunday dawned with much less wind and the fleet encountered conditions varying between drifter and 10 knots throughout the day. Going the right way in every race was absolutely essential and the team of Cesare and Manion had the best instincts for the day. Congratulations to Richard Gordon, Regatta Chairman, on a well organized and executed Regatta Plan. Great food, great trophies and good friends combined with very competitive Star Racing always makes a good Star Class Event at the Bedford Pitcher.
