District 6  Regatta Report

2008 Black Star Regatta

Winds were light and variable for the 2nd annual Black Star Regatta held on Budd Inlet in Olympia Washington on April 26th and 27th. It was well attended with 23 boats racing in Classic and Wood Star Divisions. One boat came down from Vancouver BC and was sold by the owner after the regatta to a local sailor. All of the Stars in this regatta are very used and affordable to keep the cost of racing down to a manageable budget for the average family. As a result the Regatta was a family affair with over a quarter of the fleet crewed by family members including: husbands and wives, fathers and sons, or fathers and daughters. The top finishing boat in the regatta this year was sailed by Norm Smit with his 12 year old daughter Laura.

For the first day there were 5 races sailed in 5 to 7 knots of wind out of the northwest, making all the crews work hard to keep the boats in clear breeze and on the lifted tack. The racing was close as Norm and Laura Smit won the first two races, but by the end of the first day it was anybody's regatta with just a few points separating the top five places including: Norm Smit, Joseph Donnette, Derek DeCouteau, Dave Elliot and Ellington Tynes. In the Wood Division Bill Brosius had a commanding lead over the Second place Wood boat skippered by Jim Findley at the end of the first day.

On the second day the wind forgot that we were having a regatta for awhile, and the races were postponed while the committee tried to figure out if there was any chance of wind arriving in time to hold at least one race. The wind finally came in from the North and it was shifting 20 degrees or more as the committee set the course. After the starting line was set and the starting sequence in play, the wind shifted to the east making the committee boat favored by over 20 degrees. After much bumping in the pile up at the committee boat and penalty turns completed, the race was off in the shifting breeze. Eric Egge and Barbara Stuart who seem to do extremely well in these conditions, and having avoided the pile of boats at the committee boat end of the line, sailed on to a first place finish in the race followed closely by Joseph Donnette and Norm Smit. The race finished with no time left to start another race so that was the regatta with six races sailed.

We hope to hold this regatta the last weekend of April next year, so make your plans to come and join us in your Classic and Wood Stars, or borrow one of ours. We continue to hope that some of the newer vintage Stars in the district will come and join us, in which case we will have an Open Division as well. What can be better than being on the water with this classic 1911 designed Olympic class boat. We have some boats in the water that are available to be borrowed or purchased for our Monday and Thursday night racing during the summer, so call us and join in the fun on scenic Budd Inlet.
