|District 12 Regatta Report|| |
Sat Sep 14th, 2002 through Sun Sep 15th, 2002
| by John MacCausland|
After a long summer with not much breeze we were blessed with two days of wind. Saturday we raced two races in a nice southwesterly of 10 to 20 knots. There were quite a few shifts to make the racing very challenging.
By the end of the day, having sailed two races, John MacCausland and John Wulff were in the lead, having won both races. The next four boats were only separated by one point. Very close racing.
Saturday night the Northern Lake George Star Fleet put on a great steak cookout. There was more food than anybody could eat. Thanks to all that helped to put this event on.
Sunday morning, to all our surprise, it was not raining. The forecast was for rain, heavy at times. It did not look good for sailing on Saturday night. But as we all know the weather forecast never seems to be right. By 10 am we were all on the water for the start. Again we had a good southwesterly breeze, about 10-15 knots with a few shifts thrown in for good measure.
MacCausland and Wulff lead at each mark to seal the overall victory. But the real race was for second. Dave Cook, Peter Hall, Rick Dhein and Hank Rowan all had their chance to finish second during the last race. But in the end Rick Dhein and Bruce Hatfield came out on top. Peter Hall, in his second Star regatta was third.
Lake George is a beautiful place to be this time of year and we hope the Star Fleet will carry on the tradition of having us to their Yacht Club each fall. By the way, the rain held off until we all had our boats packed and ready for the trip home. So much for the weather forecast.
