New England Masters

Sailed at Cedar Point Y.C.

Seventeen boats from 6 fleets and 4 districts showed up for the New England Mastersí series (age 50 and up), held at the Cedar Point Yacht Club in Westport, Connecticut. A nice contingent of four boats came from the Mid-Eastern Shore fleet, and Harry Walker returned to the state of his birth from Florida for the weekend festivities.

Saturdayís racing was held in a nice southeasterly in marginal hiking conditions for the first two races. Conditions began to lighten during the third race and Race Committee chairman Eric Robbins mercifully decided to shorten the race to one round.

Special note should be made that Guy Gurney made it to the starting line a little late in the first race (2 Ĺ minutes actually) and went up the shore to pass half the fleet on the first beat. Somehow he didnít take note of the shore effect and didnít finish as well in the second race. Meanwhile, just before the finish of the second race Harry Walker and Tod Raynor jibed but unfortunately Harry fell into the water. Tod was able to haul Harry back on board to finish the race, and they went on to finish the third race with their best finish of the series.

Saturday evening the CLIS fleet put on a nice dinner which has become a hallmark of their events, with the various fleet members pitching in to help get the dinner together. Special thanks to Tim Du Val for providing the food for the dinner.

Sundayís races were held in a southwesterly, again in marginal hiking conditions with the crews in and out of the boats throughout the weather legs. In the end it came down to very tight racing between Joe Bainton / Will Christensen and Will Swigart / Desmond Walsh, with Bainton / Christensen taking the final deciding race.

Top Grand Master (60-69) was Guy Gurney, first Exalted Grand Master (70-79) was Jack Button, and first Very Exalted Grand Master (80-89) was Harry Walker. In honor of Emil Karlovsky becoming 90 earlier this month a new Masterís category has been created, the name of which is open to suggestions.

Special thanks to David Hoffman for being the race organizer and for loaning his boat to Harry Walker, and to Eric Robbins and his race committee crew for running a good series of races.
