Report by Susie Nolan: Milford Yacht Club held its annual Nutmeg Regatta on September 29th and 30th, 2012. Ten boats were on line this year, 5 from Milford Yacht Club and 5 from Cedar Point Yacht Club, with light forecasts for both days. CPYC’s Bill Watson and his crew Roger Sharp drove the farthest from Maine and Massachusetts respectively to compete and win the series. CPYC’s Peter Cusick and crew Drew Plominski placed second and CPYC’s Jock Kolhas and crew Roland Schulz were third. Saturday forecast was for light winds 7-15 out of the north, however winds proved to be unpredictable and shifty keeping the races competitive. CPYC’s Watson and Sharp were mixing it up with fellow members Sternberg and Massey and Kolhas and Schulz the first race finishing first second and third respectively. The second race proved to be anyone’s race with a very shifty course and tight finish amongst the fleet. CPYC’s Cusick and Plominski placed first, MYC’s Bodden and Converse in second and CPYC’s Watson and Sharp in third. Race three added even more depth to the field with the addition of MYC’s Roberts and McSweeney in third place, securing the master’s division win. On day two good race management, skippering, tactics, and crewing kept the mood light even with the hour and a half start delay. The predicted 0-10 northerly winds proved to be light, challenging and unreliable. CLIS’s Watson and Sharp, Sternberg and Massey, and Kolhas and Schulz swept the top three finishes of the day. Participation was down this year from years past due to the NA’s in Ontario a few weeks prior and another regatta in the Chesapeake Bay area the same weekend. The Star fleet camaraderie made this Nutmeg Regatta another competitive and fun race, wrapping up the 2012 season. |
