86th Atlantic Coast Championship The Boston Harbor Star Fleet, played host to the 86th annual Atlantic Coast Championships (First District Blue Star), July 9-11 at the Cottage Park Yacht Club. This event will be remembered as the closest scored Blue Star Championship, as only 2 points separated the top 5 finishes. Doyle Sails’ defending Blue Star winner, Jud Smith with crew David Timberlake, tied Doyle Sails’ Tomas Hornos and Roman Gotsulyak, with the tie breaker going to the Doyle boss - Jud. Right on their heels was a 3 way tie for third, with Pete Cusack and Mike Nicole, Ken Woods and Bill Paton and the team of Bill Watson and Brian Sharpe. Conditions on Broad Sound appeared perfect in sea breezes of 9-14 for three of the four races. A near perfect regatta was only spoiled by two monstrous thunder and line squalls that dominated race 3. Zero visibility and 30 knot breezes raised havoc during this challenge of spirit and skill. The Master’s Division was won by Jud and Bill Watson grabbed the Grand Master’s title. Former World Snipe Champion Tomas Hornos secured the Junior Championship trophy and new star skipper Ed Morey and crew Trippe Duke sailed home with the Green Star. Once again, the Boston Harbor Fleet provided a memorable event with great assistance from the CPYC race committee, PRO Alan Pritchard, guest mark boat captain Craig Prandini and the wives and friends of fleet members. |
