Report by David Bolles: Seventeen boats put in appearance at the 66th running of the Arms-White Regatta at Milford Yacht Club, Connecticut. The turn-out was relatively light perhaps due to weather predictions of a wet weekend. Fortunately these predictions were for the most part wrong and we didn’t get any wetter than is to be expected when sailing a Star. As the boats rolled in on Saturday morning neither the wind forecast nor the lack of wind on the water looked good. For those of us who got a late start in getting the boat to the yacht club this was a blessing in disguise, as it gave us the extra time needed to get the boats put together and out onto the water. Around 11 AM the wind did put in an appearance out of the northeast, which meant that it would be a squirrely day. After waiting and hoping to catch the wind just at the right moment to get the fleet off on a square line the race committee got the first race off at 12 noon. Squirrely conditions continued, making it so that the eventual top boats were not always in the lead. However, in the end the fleet sorted itself out and the boats which ended the series in the top three positions finished in that order. Races 2 and 3 were more or less a repeat of the first with two exceptions: 1) the wind came up nicely at the beginning of the second race making for hiking conditions for the first part of the race, and 2) Thorny and Mike hit it right during the beats of the third race and came in 2nd. Interestingly enough, despite the shifty conditions the fleet managed to stay in a fairly tight pack, with none making a real break-away nor anyone getting really far behind. The forecast for Sunday was for plenty of wind out of the northeast and the fleet was not disappointed. On the way out it seemed that the big blasts predicted may have been overstated, but as the day progressed the wind built to something between 15 and 20 with the race committee recording a couple of brief shots approaching 30. The final race was fairly windy throughout and by the end of the final upwind leg there was a substantial separation of the fleet. However, the top two boats, MacCausland / Murphy and McChesney / Zwingelberg, had a nice tacking dual right to the finish line with MacCausland / Murphy taking the win. This is Johnny Mac’s 14th win of the Arms Trophy. Thanks go to Alan Pritchard and the R.C. crew for putting on the races and the new Mid-Conn fleet officer Kevin Elterman for organizing the regatta. |
