64TH ARMS-WHITE REGATTA

Twenty-five boats from 7 fleets of the Tri-District area plus one boat from the 20th District participated in the 64th running of the Arms-White Regatta. It was nice to see three different father-and-son teams out on the water: Fotis Boliakis with son Evan, Rick Dhein with son Clark, and Tomas Hornos with father Luis.

Saturday’s racing took place in light to moderate winds out of the southwest which varied both in wind speed and direction. The son and father team of Tomas and Luis Hornos were able to read the winds the best and came out the clear winner of the day with three deuces. Individual races went to three different teams: John MacCausland / Bob Schofield, Ched Proctor / Jim Mullane, and Rodrigo Meireles / Roman Gotsulyak.

Sunday proved to be a different sort of day. The winds, while still out of the southwest, were stronger and steadier, with wind speeds registering in the 10-12 knot range. The eventual series winners, John MacCausland / Bob Schofield and Jock Kohlhas / Trevor Nederlof, took the remaining first place finishes to finish the series tied on points. Ched Proctor, in his first outing in a Star, with seasoned crew Jim Mullane, took series third. Rodrigo Miereles, better known as Zorro, suffered a backstay problem in the first race of the day, or else he and Roman might have spiced the series up with even tighter series scoring.
