Report by Werner Holtze: The annual Chili Regatta was hosted by the Seneca Yacht Club in wet blustery conditions typical of late September Upstate New York. A strong southerly wind and sizable waves greeted the hearty crews Saturday morning, allowing two very active and wet races to be finished. Our most senior skipper, Hans Fogh, showed us how to sail the shifts and chop of Seneca Lake by winning both races. Sunday brought a cold front in from the west and kept boats ashore for most of the morning until winds abated enough to make racing feasible. Strong gusts and very shifty winds at the weather mark challenged the fleet and provided close racing until the front reasserted itself with 30+ winds. Among the chaos of gear failure, a broken mast, flailing jibs, and man overboard mayhem, five boats managed to finish and bring racing to an end for the day. A warm fire, hot chili, and cold beer brought the regatta to an agreeable close. Congratulations to Hans Fogh and Steve Cutting for winning with three firsts. Also, a hearty thanks to Marlene Koberg and her volunteers who fed us, and Lois Gindling and her Race Committee who gave us such great racing in trying conditions. |
