22 crews were at the starting line for the 31st edition of the Coppa Tito Nordio in Trieste. They were coming from 5 different countries (Italy, Austria, Rep.Ceca, Switzerland, Russia). Friday 22nd of April three of the six scheduled races took place. A lazy sunshine in the end prevailed over the clouds. The wind was light, around 5-8 knots, from west. Races were caracterized by a race field difficult to manage, with quick change of front places due to wind shifts. Moreover, a sustained current made the game even more complicated, causing some contact at the mark roundings. In the three races two competitors took the first two places, the strong Austrian Passegger-Kropfitsch and the local Danelon-Gazzetta. Both of them had already won two editions of the regatta. The former scored a 1-1-2, the latter 2-2-1. The third were the Swiss Infanger- Chtchetinine and fourth the Russian Zhivotovskiy-Shnyr. After the races, on the docks of the Yacht Club Adriaco, the usual 'pasta party and free beer' took place. The late afternoon sunshine made it even more pleasant. Saturday 24th, under a cloudy sky and various rainshowers, the race committee placed the field and gave the start to the first of three races. All were sailed with a 'scirocco' (south- east) wind quite stable, blowing between 8 and 14 knots. They have been three races well fought, with various changes in the leading positions, and many duels. The two leading teams fought for the victory. In the end Danelon-Gazzetta prevailed, because they could discard a premature start in the fifth race, and scored 3-3 in the other two. Passegger-Kropfitsch, being fifth in all three races (one discarded) were second. In third position with a good 1-4-4 there are the Russian Zhivotovskiy-Shnyr, while the swiss Infanger loses one place and finished fourth. With an alternate first and second place in the last two races the italian Battistin- Paloschi and Ritucci-Ciotti advanced some position, finishing fifth and eight respectively. To be underlined also the performance of the mixed Austrian team, made by Armin and Margarete Wiedergurt, sixth, and the sailors from Czech Rep. Sterba-Pivnikca, seventh. The decision of sailing three races on Saturday was driven by a bad wether forecast for Sunday, when a strong 'bora' was predicted. It has been a good call, since it has allowed to complete the regatta series one day in advance with great satisfaction of everybody. Prizegiving ceremony took place saturday afternoon, and also the hauling operations, that could have been difficult on Sunday with strong wind. Beside the first three places, prizes were given to the best skipper in the catergory of Master (Danelon), Grand Master (Passegger) and Exalted Grand Master (Sturm), and also the the Day Race winners, Passegger-Kropfitsch and Battistin-Paloschi respectively. photos and results: www.starclasstrieste.it |
