District 2 Regatta Report | Sat May 2nd, 2015 through Sun May 3rd, 2015 |
Avery Donald wins the weekend! |
| |
Light and variable was the forecast and light
and variable it was! Five races were sailed
in this year’s Oursler Spring Star Regatta.
On Saturday, three races were sailed in light
winds from the NW. The third race of the day
was shortened due to the dying and shifting
breeze with most of the fleet limping to the
finish and being towed back to the harbor.
Despite the fluky conditions, Will Murdoch
consistently stayed on top with two firsts
and a second, followed by Avery Donald with
two thirds and a second, followed by Alan
Campbell and Donald Elliott tying for third
place for the day. The forecast for Sunday was not promising, but surprisingly, a steady breeze from the NW greeted the competitors. Two races were held on Sunday, but again, the last race of the day was shortened due to the dying and shifting wind conditions. There emerged a pattern of a favored right side on almost every upwind leg. In first race, Tim Paris split with the fleet and headed right and came back strong. Avery Donald, furthest to the left, noticed that and took everyone’s transom to go right and hit the lay line working back up to mid-fleet. On the final run to the finish, Tim Paris looked good on the right with clear air and steady light breeze. Avery headed right to take advantage of that. At the finish, the fleet converged and Avery managed to keep her air clear just long enough to squeeze by and take first followed by Alan Campbell and Tim Paris. The last race was started in a dying breeze. Had the breeze not died, it is likely that the overall finish would be a repeat of Saturday’s ranking. However, with nothing to lose, Avery chose to split with the fleet and again go right to the lay line, a decision that would put her in either last or first place depending on how the wind filled. The wind did fill from the right giving Avery her second first for the day and first overall with Will Murdoch coming in second overall and Alan Campbell coming in third. Many thanks to Miles River Yacht Club for hosting this fine and enjoyable regatta. |
