2015 Al Henning Memorial Regatta

Saturday: In honor of the Racine Yacht Club's 100th anniversary, which is next year, the RYC race director decided to send all boats including one designs on a "distance race". The race was about 20 miles long. The start was near the harbor, to the Racine reeflight about 1 mile away, then 6 miles due south, sailed back north for 8 miles, then west 1 mile, south 1 mile, then to the finish line which was another mile west. In all about a 20 mile race. The race was fast and fun to the southernmost mark with a West wind about 10-15 knots. On the way back north, the wind died and eventually filled in from the east. The boats that stayed closest to the shore did the best. The race took just over 4 hours, which was too long for the Pedersons who only packed 6 beers.

Sunday: The start of the race was moved up to 9:30am due to a forecast of strong winds. There were 3 races scheduled. At the start the wind was SW 15-20 with gusts to 25. Only two star teams were brave enough to race. Gusts were in excess of 30 during the race. After one race all remaining races were cancelled.
