2015 Cleveland Race Week |

Five races were sailed over two days this past weekend with no throwout provided. After rigging their boats on Friday, sailors were able to enjoy cold adult beverages and Gumbo on the deck of the Edgewater Yacht Club. Saturday started with the teams launching under grey skies and drizzle. Race one started with an extremely light breeze of under 5 knots. Those that were more successful in keeping their boat moving and hunting for air prevailed. Richard Wilber, sailing with his son Joe who was experiencing his first Star regatta, dominated the day with a 1-2-2 to finish the day with 5 points. Mike Phinney and Mark Strube had a solid showing, finishing second for the day with a 2-4-1 totaling 7 points. The stage was set for a battle at the third, fourth and fifth positions with Rick Rundle and Chris Wurtz finishing the day at 12 points, Terry Gibney and Mike Lorenz at 13 points, and Thad Brej with Chris Hardin at 15 points. Saturday ended with blender drinks, food and great tunes at the club allowing the sailors to relax and talk a little smack about the days racing. Sunday began with storms cells moving through the area and the rain that they brought with them. After a one hour postponement, the RC sent the fleets out to the course despite further threats of thunderstorms. Five teams elected to remain on shore while the remaining four ventured out to the course directly off of downtown Cleveland. Two races were sailed in variable winds of 8-10 with puffs to 12 or so. Mike Phinney and Mark Strube sailed their way to a first place finish at the 2015 Cleveland Race Week. Congratulations to one and all that attended this well organized event. If you weren't on a Star in Cleveland this weekend, you missed out! |
