2013 Miller Series

2013 J. Rulon Miller Series

One thing was for sure, no other boat but a Star boat could have completed three races on the Chesapeake, Saturday of the Miller Series (ok, well maybe Log Canoes). In fact, though the races were demanding, with sudden variability as the thermal wind traveling up the Bay fought the local River flow, the ultimate Regatta winners showed that skill trumps luck. One benefit of the variability of Saturday’s weather was a spectacular atmospheric show of cloud formations. A huge anvil cloud over Delaware rose threateningly but dissipated harmlessly (except for probably being responsible for the lack of thermal development!) John MaCausland, as impressive as ever, seemed to divine the biggest shifts as the came in and when he got behind, steadily passed boats upwind and down to win races 1 and 2. The breeze started as a soft SE flow at about 165 degrees. As race 1 progressed, it died and though expected to veer to the SW, would suddenly pull the rug from under the right side players and swing back to the SE. On the last beat, it suddenly made up its mind to behave as forecast and went far to the SW and built to a modest hiking strength. Johnny Mac had a good enough lead to position himself to take advantage of this but the real beneficiary of this was Murray Leigh and Andrew Ingalls who went from the back of the fleet to finish 2nd. With a bit more promise and wind strength in the beginning, race 2 became an endurance test for the competitors and the Race Committee. The tenuous air dropped, shifted and played with the sailors making for a slow and frustrating race for some. But not for all as John MacCausland again finished 1st followed by the speedy Laura Beigel (crewed by her father, Read). They were followed by her steady sailing Auntie, Barb Beigel Vosbury. After a short respite while the fleet ate whatever lunches they had and hydrated themselves, the wind woke up and delivered the promised seabreeze. Race 3 was fine with Mike Hecky shooting off with a perfect start from the pin end, talked up to the line by Shane Zwingelberg like an air traffic controller. Mike led the whole way to win, followed by Johnny Mac with John Avis crewing. Always fast, John Vanderhoff crossed close behind in 3rd. A long day and we were late for dinner but had 3 races behind us! Sunday brought us a nearly perfect day for racing Stars. A light Southerly during the tow out built to a hiking breeze. Race 1 was won convincingly by Tom Price and Alex Schwab who started at the pin and banged the left, benefitted by a 30 degree back as the breeze rose and filled from the Bay Bridge. Barb Vosbury with young Read Beigel (nephew) crewing for her were a closing second followed by John MacCausland sailing his throw-out race (a 3rd! Sheesh!) The last race was fun and had a rock steady breeze, made for Stars. John MacCausland showed us how it’s done and won, followed by John Vanderhoff (crewed by Adam Dolezal). 3rd was Tom Price from the host club. Awards were handed out at the Boathouse with John MacCausland again winning the Miller Series. Mike Hecky and Barb Vosbury were tied for 2nd with Mike winning the tiebreaker. Next year’s Miller Series will be the 80th. A significant and historical milestone! Already, we have a big event planned with a party on the “Lone Star” (the amazing houseboat that is a Gibson Island harbor fixture and has a reputation for memorable parties). Hope to see you there for the 80th Miller Series! Tom Price 7313 “Bop”
