2011 Tulip Tune Up

Report by Jon VanderMolen:
The 58th Annual Tulip Tune Up proved to be another one of those great times that you won’t soon forget. The sailing was outstanding. For the last several weeks Mother Nature has not been kind to the Great Lakes Region with below average temps and above average rainfall. But the Good Lord would never disrupt the best regatta of the season, and blessed all that participated with the perfect temperatures, perfect wind, and the always famous perfect parties!

Tulip Tune Up has a long history in the 4th District and it’s the camaraderie among the participants that makes this event so great. The rivalries between the Springfield Boys and the Gull Lake Gang are epic and grow stronger as we begin to introduce our children to the fun. 14 year old Jack Londrigan sailed his first Tulip Tune Up with his famous father Tom Jr. They failed to bring home any wooden shoes, but they will be back next year, bigger, stronger and faster. Joe Londrigan made his return to the Star after a decade long lay-off. It was great to have him back. V1 (Tom VanderMolen and Steve Ticknor) of Gull Lake’s infamous V3 Racing Team, came out sporting their new Montana Mint P-Star. This is without a doubt the most beautiful Star boat ever built, at least until triple Whipple gets his quad painted with blue pearl, or perhaps when the Golden Boy shows up with his chrome keel. Look out Star Worlds, the colored Star boat is making a return and it all started on Gull Lake.

Long time great Jack Rickard was a stud. He and crew Sam Eadie came out of the gates flying. They led the entire first race up until the last 200 yards when a big lefty helped Todd Gay and Joe Londrigan just slip by. Jack and Sam were enjoying a repeat performance in race 2 when a broken jib halyard spoiled the good karma. Larry Whipple and crew Rick Burgess made it clear to the Hatfield’s and McCoy’s that they want to be a part of the great Midwest rivalry too. Larry reminded the V3 Racing Team that he has won wooden shoes at all four of the Flower Regatta’s he’s previously sailed in. He also lamented that a PStar with deck stripes won every regatta in last winter’s Miami circuit and that he would not be surprised if that trend continued on Gull Lake. A wire to wire horizon job in the last race proved this veteran is ready to make a run for Silver in a few weeks. Plus he went home to Seattle with size 6 wooden shoes and a guaranteed future in the great rivalry.

The best story of the weekend though was the dominating performance by Lake Springfield’s Todd Gay and Darin Jenson. Todd and Darin sailed all 5 races flawlessly with untouchable speed and height. They rarely missed a shift and easily won the regatta by 11 points, never finishing out of the top three. The always gracious Todd will carry the tag of ‘favorite” as he heads into the Spring Championship on his home waters of Lake Springfield. Well done boys.

As is always the case when the Springfield Boys and the Gull Lake Gang get together at the big lake they call Gull,, “It aint racing, if there aint rubbin.”
