It was a beautiful fall day for the Shuster/2nd District Championship Regatta; sunny skies, warm temperature, but no wind! Fortunately, we were able to observe these “no wind conditions” from shore rather than bouncing about on the race course. We needed three races for this regatta to be considered a district championship, so a 0830 warning signal time was set for Sunday racing. Well, again beautiful conditions, but no wind. At last, some zephyrs of wind started to appear and boats launched with a scheduled 1100 warning signal. Upwind, boats banged both sides of the course with the right side being favored. The teams of MacCausland/Zuschnitt and Collins/Doyle passed Vanderhoff/Dolezal on the frst downwind leg and finished one and two. For the second race conditions were similar, a light breeze around 340 degrees. Again, boats went right and left, with the right side paying big this time. About halfway through the race most of the light breeze dropped out. This scattered the fleet and, fortunately, on the last leg the current was with us which probably allowed the race to be completed. Vanderhoff/Dolezal finished first and MacCausland/Zuschnitt recovered from the left side to take second and the Shuster regatta. Elliot/Brooks sailed a very smart second race to take series 3rd and they were also awarded the Charles Ulmer trophy for the top MES fleet sailing team. Many thanks goes to Marshall Patterson and Race Committee for making the most out of the wind that was available. The “down home” flavor of the shoreside activities was very much appreciated. Thank you MES Fleet and MRYC Staff. |
