Okay, so it's named the Chili regatta because they serve Chili on Sunday not because it can be chilly! The tradition started 20 some odd years ago as a chili cook off between two Star sailors and so it continues today. All kinds of chili--venison chili, wild boar chili, pulled pork chili and just plain ole good chili. Twenty one boats registered for the 2010 running of the Chili regatta at Seneca Yacht Club. Seven fleets were represented including six boats from Canada. Saturday's forecast was for 10 to 15 knots.....but Steve Haarstick said it was going to build to 25 knots by the afternoon. Note to self "when the sages speak, listen and listen carefully". Race one started in a breeze that was shifting to the North at a rapid pace. The downwind leg turned into a reach and there was no change of course to the next weather mark. Now if this had been some other regatta there would have been grumbling, but we all got to reach, flat out hiked and reaching in about 12-13 knots of breeze. WOO HOO, it was fun! The breeze settled into a NNW'erly about 13 for Race two, gusting a little higher. During Race three we got the breeze predicted by Steve. The direction had settled down and the water was full of white caps coming from the downtown area. Several of us dropped out either with breakdowns or trying to avoid a breakdown. Saturday evening dinner was cooked and served by Rick and Jan Burgess at their lakeside property. It was a Brazilian style cook out---wild boar, homemade bologna, homemade kielbasa, chicken, ribs and coleslaw. Fireworks ended the evening. Sunday was forecast to be light. And light it was when we arrived. A couple of zephyrs here and there, but even those were mostly thermal. The thermal finally took over and we all launched and sailed Race four. Definitely a lake breeze, the positions changed throughout the race. All packed up and ready to get on the road and out comes the chili and trophies. Thank you to all the members of the Seneca Lake fleet and to the members of the Seneca Yacht Club for hosting the event and all of us. And to those two Star sailors so long ago that started this chili contest! YUM! Great hospitality, great friends. It doesn't get better than that! |
