2010 Fall Etchells/Star Regatta

Well, if you like wind, mark your calendar for next year’s Annapolis Yacht Club Fall Star regatta. It seems like the last three years or more there has been breeze on for this regatta. And true to form, with great breeze there comes break downs of many kinds; masts, control systems, boats (Keith Donald’s restored woody had deck damage) and human bodies (may not have broken but certainly tired).

What a great weekend of Star sailing. Thank you AYC for another wonderful event. Special thanks to all the traveling boats for getting our turn out to 15 boats.

The schedule was for 3 races on day 1 and 2 races on day 2. Both days saw bright skies and wind ranged from 12-20 knots with gusts maybe a little higher. Temps were in the high 50’s to low 60’s. Sounds like fall sailing and it was.

Race 1 was the lightest and probably the trickiest race of the regatta. There were probably 3 or 4 different leaders during the race but Johnny Mac took the gun in the end. The wind shifted to the left as predicted and the fleet saw two super races with much smaller wind shifts. Peter McChesney took the gun in race two and Tomas Hornos took the gun in race 3. Three different winners on day one showed a clear sign there was strong competition. At the end of day one Johnny was at the top of the scoreboard followed by Tomas Hornos and Arthur Anosov tied for 2nd and Aaron Serinis and Tom Price tied for 4th.

After some well deserved adult beverages, a tasty buffet regatta dinner at AYC and much needed sleep, day two saw more wind. Winds were out of the NW at 15-20+ which guaranteed 20-40 degree wind shifts on every beat. Mr. Home Town Boy McChesney hit the shifts well and got 2 bullets. Johnny and Arthur had consistent top finishes placing them in 1st and 2nd for the regatta.

Probably half the fleet is headed down to Miami for the first regatta in November. Good timing as Annapolis saw temperatures under the freezing mark last night. Peter McChesney
