District 5  Regatta Report

Regatta Base

2010 Rollins Bowl

Seventeen boats signed up for the annual Star regatta hosted by San Diego YC and the Rollins Family May 22 and 23. The wind forecast was decidedly not San Diego though. With an unseasonable front rolling down from the north, Saturday started with a sizable ocean swell and 10 to 16 knots of wind. After three races, Mark Reynolds and Eric Doyle were 1 – 2 respectively with a host of other threats (Erik Lidecis, George Szabo, Ben Mitchell for starters) within striking range. Saturday evening, a wonderful dinner, now a tradition, was hosted by Ruth Rollins at her home in Pt. Loma. Ruth's husband Frank, and brother-in-law Chick Rollins (namesakes for the event) both sailed and enthused the Star fleet for many decades.

Sunday's weather proved more challenging however. The forecast calling for bigger seas (breaking waves!) and higher wind was accurate. After a reconnaissance run with some of the skippers out to the Coronado Roads, there was consensus that it would be safer for both RC and sailors to run the remaining two races inside the Bay. There was also consideration given to minimizing the potential for gear failure, exhaustion beyond the fun zone, and the time involved to get to the sailing area.

While the RC setup the new course along Harbor Island, 15 of the competitors were buzzing around frothy San Diego Bay in to 26 knots of breeze. Eleven competitors stuck around for the start, and two races were run for the completion of the Rollins Bowl. John O'Donnell became the owner of the sole rig casualty of the windy weekend. Ben Mitchell had a good day moving up to 4th overall from a halfway position of 6th on Saturday.

But the top three remained in order – Erik Lidecis in third, Eric Doyle in second and Mark Reynolds winning with a pair of firsts on the day for a total score of 5 pts with the throwout. It was great to see a renewed enthusiasm for this classic Star regatta. And San Diego Yacht Club is looking forward to a successful bid to host the 2013 Star Worlds. Stay Tuned.
