2009 Rollins Bowl

Sailed at San Diego Yacht Club, California, USA.

Report by Rod Hagebols AUS 8268 – Endeavour 2012
The Rollins bowl regatta took place last weekend in great sailing conditions off San Diego. Eight boats were registered with teams coming down from LA and San Francisco.

The schedule was 3 races Saturday and 2 races Sunday, with all the races getting off on time thanks to the great work of San Diego Yacht Club volunteers. Saturday started with the tow out to the racing area which the SDYC race committee provides. Once out on the racing area crews busily got their sails up and readied their boats for the day of racing.

Racing on Saturday was carried out in 8-12 knot winds from 285deg with overcast skies. With the overcast skies the sea breeze didn’t have the chance to fill so conditions didn’t really follow the typical summer trends on the race course. Typically the right hand corner of the race course is favored but we were racing in cool gradient winds with a slow oscillating shift pattern, eliminating the favored right corner.

We were sharing the race course with the Etchells doing their Orca bowl regatta. They provided a great wind indicator for us as they started 6 minutes before we did. We also used their start line which gave us lots of space and clear lanes for the first beat. This was the state of play really for the whole weekend of racing. Needless to say with boats being able to find clean lanes for the majority of the beats it was a little like a drag race. That being said it was nice to measure exactly where we were at speed wise. It turns out we were quite fast using the North main and LM2jib. We were also using a Lillia 8268, one of John Danes old boats which I purchased last year.

My crew Conrad Brown from LA did a great job of keeping us pointed in the right direction. On Saturday night, Ruth Rollins hosted the annual Star party at her house up on Point Loma. It was a great turn out with Star sailors from the past and present attending. There was plenty of food and beverage to satisfy the hungry crowd.

Sunday was a carbon copy of Saturday except George Szabo joined in after arriving back from a successful European trip at the Eastern Hemispheres. We managed to win the morning race in a nail biter from Erik Lidecis which gave us the regatta with a race to spare. Next is Baxter bowl up in LA in 3 weeks time so stay tuned.

Report by Will Stout:
This year’s Rollins bowl was marked by a small but very competitive fleet, with a strong turnout of Olympic campaign veterans. Cloudy, rainy, and cold weather did not make for a San Diego “Chamber of Commence” weekend, but both days of racing brought relatively consistent conditions that offered great racing.

Saturday winds were WNW 8-12 kts with 10-15 degree oscillations. Rodney Hagerbols, sailing Endeavor 2012, showed off his pure boatspeed and handedly won 2 of 3 races Saturday. Will Stout raced Bennie Mitchell’s Bennie’s Speedracer to consistent second place finishes. After taking the gun in the second race, Erik Lidecis’ Team Corinthian finished third for the day. Ms. Ruth Rollins continued a yearly tradition in honor of Rollins Bowl namesake Chick Rollins on Saturday evening, hosting a fabulous dinner for the regatta sailors and supporters. As in past years, Ms. Rollins served up more delicious food than even all the star sailors could eat.

Sunday brought a lighter, more stable breeze, making for great boatspeed races. Rodney Hagerbols again proved that speed kills, winning the first race and locking up the regatta with the throw-out. Will Stout and Erik Lidecis started the last race tied, with Bennie’s Speedracer needing to gain one point on Team Corinthian to take second. Dr. Lee Kellerhouse snuck in between Will and Eric after an intense tacking duel up the final beat of the last race, securing the second place finish for Bennie’s Speedracer.

Many thanks to Dr. Kellerhouse for getting everyone out on the water for a great weekend of racing, and thank you to Ms. Rollins for hosting Saturday’s dinner.
