Sam Hopkins and Chris Brown take Series 1st at Shuster Regatta |
| |
The series began Saturday in St. Michaels at MRYC with high expectations. Five stars took to the water joined by several comets in a building NW breeze. By the time of the first warning, however, the wind had built to 20 knots with gusts. This chased the comets and one of the stars off the course. Worsening conditions caused the RC to abandon racing and wait ashore for more moderate winds, which unfortunately never came. On Sunday there was a hint of a breeze from the West at launch time. The race committee set a short course and got things underway. The wind eventually built and shifted to the North causing a reaching contest which Karen Alt won followed by Sam Hopkins and Will Murdoch. The out of towners, Matt Cartwright and crew from Lake George, got to see firsthand the fickleness of the Chesapeake breeze and finished fourth followed by Rowan Perkins. For the second race, conditions steadied with the wind holding fairly steady out of the North at 8-12. The top three switched positions with Will winning followed by Sam and then Karen. Now we have a three way tie. Sam settled the tie by winning the next two and final races with Will holding 2nd in both. In the last race Matt edged out Karen at the finish to take third in that race. Bob Bennett, race committee chair, presented the first place, Harold Shuster trophy to Sam Hopkins, second place to Will Murdoch, and third place to Karen Alt. The novice trophy was awarded to Matt Cartwright, which hopefully made his trip worthwhile. The regatta is named for Harold since his efforts and spirit had much to do with forming and growth of the MES fleet. Beryl Wiley presented the Charles Ulmer trophy to Will Murdoch for the best finish for an MES sailor. Sam thanked the race committee, headed by Bill Cockayne, for their diligent efforts in conducting a fine regatta. And finally, Matt thanked MES and MRYC for their hospitality (including generous shrimp and scallop hors doeuvres) and invited all to the Lake George Open next year (after the ice melts). |
