Report by Eric Lind: Sunday, May 17th - Gull Lake - Richland, Michigan — The 56th Annual Tulip Time Tuneup Regatta, hosted by the Gull Lake Yacht Club and the local Star fleet, was sailed this weekend on beautiful Gull Lake in Southwest Michigan. The event continues to draw top Star Sailors from around the world with sailors from Kiel, Germany to Seattle, Washington competing for the prized wooden shoe trophies. The fleet of 27 entries was greeted on Saturday morning with winds gusting to 30 knots which convinced 8 crews to stay on shore. Two races were sailed with Jud Smith from Boston leading Peter Wright and Marc Pickel by 2 points. As there were only 11 boats still racing at the end of the 2nd race, the PRO, Melinda Titus, chose to send the sailors ashore and hope for better winds on Sunday. Sunday’s wind was spot on in the 8 - 12 range with lots of shifts. The competition was tight in all three races with several exciting mark roundings. Peter Wright and Jud Smith finished 1,2 in Race 3 cutting Jud’s lead to 1 point, but in Race 4 Peter finished 3rd to Jud’s 7 and pulled out a 3 point lead. Jud worked hard in the final race, but couldn’t get any boats between them. They finished 4,5 to end the regatta 2 pts apart.
