District 21 Regatta Report | Fri Jul 26th, 2002 through Sun Jul 28th, 2002 |
Star on front end loader |
| |
10 boats raced in the 21st District Championship held on Lake Dillon July 26-29. Participants included Jim Keesling's Poison Ivy, the restored hull # 25 believed to be the oldest racing Star in the world, and Hans Bucher's brand new Steinmayer # 8100. The weekend brought some interesting challenges for the participants. The summer drought lowered the lake level to a point where the marina crane and launch ramp were not usable. The fleet resorted to launching the boats using a front end loader with a stinger pole on the front. The District's own version of a travel hoist. See attached pictures. Six races were sailed in 8 - 15 KT breezes. The top boats mixed things up pretty well on Friday with Seeling, 7579 and Kresge 7977 winding up tied for first after three races. Frank Keesling 6033, Kristi Huff, 5856, and Bucher, 8100 rounded out the top five. Saturday brought fresh 10-15 KT breezes and the RC set longer courses. Two races were sailed and the RC wanted to get one more in but the fleet was too tired and went home with Kresge, Seeling, Frank Keesling, Bucher and Huff in the top five. Sunday, it was survival sailing. Lots of good rides. Kresge lead the series by two points and needed a third or better to maintain that lead. Seeling and Keesling were hot on his heals. Kresge death rolled at the start and was washed out of the boat. The RC postponed the start because he was on the starboard lay line to the RC boat. They picked him up and put him back in his boat and started another sequence. Keesling caused Kresge to foul him at the start. He did his 720 on the line and got off to a very bad start, last. Winds were 25-30 with some pretty nasty puffs. Keesling and Seeling lead to the weather mark. Keesling rounded first, but Seeling got around Keesling and led most of the race. After a couple of legs, Kresge was back in fourth behind Seeling, Bucher, and Keesling. Bucher stalked a corner and lost a place. Keesling death rolled on the last downwind leg and Kresge was in second hunting for Seeling. Final finish for race six was Seeling, Kresge, Keesling, Bucher and McGann. |
