Violent thunder storms swept through Rio on Thursday night (Jan. 14). The heavy downpour cooled Rio down and left some streets flooded. Friday morning, it is overcast with flat seas and a nice breeze. The local forecast calls for more rain.

The Opening Ceremony starts at 10:00 am and will be followed by a practice race, which is not a traditional course. Instead, Friday's race offers a first-class training opportunity in one of Brazil's most iconic events, the 66th Darke de Mattos Regatta, oldest Star sailing race of the country. This special course will start in front of the Yacht Club of Rio de Janeiro and takes the boats out to Copacabana beach and back to the club in Urca, covering a distance of 11 nautical miles (approx. 19.3 km).
