At Monaco during the 31st Primo Cup on January 30 - February 1, there will be special prizes from the acclaimed marine artist Philippe Gavin for Star Class sailors.
About the Collaboration: This is both a tribute from the artist to the aesthetic lines of the Star and an accolade from the Monaco Star Fleet to the efforts of the special Star crews sailing the Primo Cup such as class juniors, class seniors and mixed crews.
This collaboration between the Monaco Star fleet and Philippe Gavin stems from the international 15-meter circuit and Yacht Club Monaco's 1909-built flagship gaff-cutter uiga on which Philippe Gavin can easily be spotted with Filippo Orlando tuning the mainsail and backstays. Filippo also actively races a Star as well as his brother Andrea and father Mario, Monaco's Star fleet captain.
About Philippe Gavin:
From his atelier in the stiff stone walls of Antibes' ancient shipyard, Philippe depicts with exceptional skill and technique the images he gathers while travelling and while sailing. His marine aquarelles production have been exhibited and acclaimed in the world's top sailing destinations.
About the Star and Monaco:
Designed in 1911, the Star is the oldest Olympic class, having been used from 1932 until 2012.
The relationship between Monaco and the Star Class was long established by the late Princess Grace. She was a fervent promoter of the class in Monaco, racing with Nibbly (hull 3803) that was imported from the USA.
The Star as a class is one of the best organized in sailing. With a worldwide association counting over 2,200 active members and with fleets active in 38 countries. Star Class Championship events are hosted around the globe in the very best sailing venues. YC Monaco hosted the European Championship in 1998 and is considering a bid to host the 2017 world championship.
More recently a worldwide ranking system for Star Sailors and a circuit of events gathering the world's very best sailors was launched by the Star Sailors League.
