At the just concluded 2011 International Sailing Federation Mid-Year Meeting in Saint Petersburg, Russia, ISAF Council approved the final slate of events for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, in which both the Men’s Keelboat and Women’s Keelboat (Match) were eliminated.

The ISAF press release of the meeting and complete slate can be found at: http://www.sailing.org/news/35891.php

The decision process is complex and involves many participants from all over the world. There was strong support within Council for keelboat sailing and the Star, and many positive statements were offered throughout the meeting. Nevertheless, the coalition of high performance dinghies and emerging nations that was clearly in evidence leading up to and throughout the meeting proved too strong to overcome.

Preparation for and attendance at ISAF meetings involves long hours of hard work and this was especially true at this meeting given the circumstances. I’d like to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to the Star team in attendance composed of Mark Reynolds (USA), Iain Percy (GBR), Dierk Thomsen (GER), Paolo Insom (International Vice President, ITA), Fried Elliott (Director, Marketing & Media), Barbara Beigel-Vosbury (Executive Director), John Gimson (GBR), Johannes Polgar (GER), and Johannes Babendererde (GER). I feel we had the most effective team at the meeting and I know no effort was spared by the entire team to advance our cause.

The Class has maintained a high level of professionalism and positive engagement with ISAF and the press throughout this process. While you may be understandably disappointed or critical of the outcome, I ask that you honor the long established tradition of respect within the Star community and please refrain from negative online or public comments during this time.

Our immediate focus turns now to our upcoming world-class fixture events, including our Centennial Celebrations at Larchmont and Saint Tropez. I look forward to seeing you at these events and others as we move forward into our next century.
