On July 17 the Russian Sailing Culture Renaissance Foundation is organizing in Moscow the "First Gold Cup" – a regatta of the Star Class commemorating the 50-years jubilee of the first Russian Olympic Gold Medal in sailing which was won in Napoli in 1960. Among the special guests will be the winner – Timir Pinegin - and his competitor from Italy, Star Class Rear Commodore Carlo Rolandi. The regatta will take place under the auspices of the Italian embassy.

Timir Pinegin in 1964.
About Timir Pinegin:
Pinegin competed for the Soviet Union in the 1956 Summer Olympics, 1960 Summer Olympics, 1964 Summer Olympics, 1968 Summer Olympics, and the 1972 Summer Olympics.

In 1956 he finished eighth as helmsman of the Soviet boat Tulilind (literally "Firebird" in Estonian) in the Star class competition.

Four years later he won the gold medal as helmsman of the Soviet boat "Tornado" in the Star class event. This gold was the USSR’s first in sailing. His boat was built by Skip Etchells in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, USA.

In 1964 he finished fifth in the Star class competition, 1968 he finished 16th in the Star class event. At all four Olympics from 1956 to 1968 he competed with his partner Fyodor Shutkov.

In 1972 he competed in the Soling class competition and finished seventh. In the late 1980s, Pinegin was the general secretary of the USSR Yacht Racing Federation.
