Early Star at Trieste

Trieste - The Trieste Star Fleet celebrated its three-quarter century. A festive event was held at Yacht Club Adriaco on Saturday January 23rd to mark the 75 Years of the Star Class Trieste Fleet, founded at Yacht Club Adriaco itself on January 14th 1935 by Carlo Strena, Paolo Mitis, Bruno Pangrazi, Tito Nordio and Antonio Tedeschi. The early days of the Trieste Star Class were remembered by Captain Franco de Denaro, active competitor and true historic memory of the fleet, by the Secretary, Renzo Simoni, and by the vice-president of YCA, Guglielmo Danelon.

The Trieste Fleet, instituted right after the Genoa Fleet and the Italian Military Marine Fleet, has a proud past, counting in its ranks great champions such as Straulino, Rode, Sorrentino, Dequal and Tito Nordio, after whom is named the prestigious Nordio Cup, organized every year by the Sartorio Pier YCA.

The Trieste Fleet lived a dark period in the 1980’s and 1990’s, but was re-born in 2002 thanks to the patient work of its current captain, Franco de Denaro, the “basilisk”. He talked with simple intensity about the adventure of ringing "back home" the mythical fixed-keel class: "When I returned to Trieste after years of absence I immediately recognized the city. But I didn’t recognize our sea. Something was missing. It was the Stars".

Today the fleet counts with 12 boats (nine of which are active), including high-level teams such as Andrea and Alessandro Nevierov, as well as skilled skippers as Guglielmo Danelon and Marco Augelli, who recently competed in the Rio de Janeiro World Championship (ending 46th, 4th of the Italian representation).

Other local talents, Gianfranco Noé, Roberto Distefano and Giulio Tarabocchia also participate occasionally in the Trieste Star Class regattas.

To conclude the event, the Secretary, Renzo Simoni introduced the 2010 Calendar of Events which will begin on March 7th with the Vittori Trophy of Trieste Italian Naval League, will continue in April and May with the opening regattas of Società Triestina della Vela and Yacht Club Adriaco and with the Barcola-Grignano Rochelli Trophy. The major event of the season will be as ever the Tito Nordio Cup (on May 29th and 30th) that attracts to Trieste an ever-growing number of competitors from Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Austria. After the Nordio Cup, the Ferin Trophy will be held on June 12th-13th and following the summer period the Città di Muggia Suraci Trophy (18th-19th September) and the Città di Trieste Trophy at the end of October.

As a final touch for the occasion Guglielmo Danelon announced the lauch of the Star Class Trieste Fleet website, (www.starclasstrieste.it), by webdesigner Mattia Gazzetta.
