Enjoy the sun - Star Class Winter Circuit

The summer of 2009 was very successful, with World's, European and North American championships having excellent turnouts and top flight competition. Being the year after the Olympics, the events had a more relaxed atmosphere, and I think were thoroughly enjoyed by all participants.

The 2009-2010 Florida/Nassau winter circuit promises to be an extension of the relaxed atmosphere that makes our national and regional events so special. With many of the elite sailors in Rio, the weekend events in Miami and the Miami Olympic Classes Regatta (January 25-30) will be more low key but still very competitive. MOCR, in particular, offers 5 days of great sailing; 10 short races, normally back at the dock by 3-4 o'clock, and Coral Reef YC hospitality. A medal race for the top 10 will be sailed on Saturday, giving us all a taste of the Olympic format. As an added attraction, MOCR is part of the ISAF’s new and exciting Sailing World Cup. Come out and give it a try—it’s great practice and good camaraderie.

Bacardi Cup remains a highlight of the Star schedule. In a slight change, the 2010 event will start Monday, March 8, and run through Saturday March 13. There will be more community involvement, and perhaps another class or 2 racing on separate courses.

The Western Hemisphere Championship in Nassau - April 12-17 - will be a particularly special event.

With warm waters, 12-18 knot winds most days, and Bahamanian hospitality, it is always special in Nassau.

This year, especially, we will be honoring Star Class Commodore Sir Durward Knowles by visiting his beautiful island.

The logistics are easy, with the US Sailing Center and a local warehouse available for storage in Miami. Shipping rates to Nassau are reasonable and hassle free. Feel free to contact myself or the office with any questions.

More and more sailors I talk to mention the fun of our continental and regional events. I plan to sail at most if not all of the US winter events. Hope to see you there.

Good sailing,
Bill Allen
