A Worldwide Call for Star Photos

We’re just around the corner from an auspicious year in Star Class and sailing history. 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the Star. I’m working on a book to commemorate 100 years of Star Class history that will straddle all districts, continents, championships and Star class friendships. Of course, there are many personalities and characters that have played a role in shaping the boats, the class and the competition and they will be the meat of the book.

I would love your help in collecting images to be considered for inclusion in the book. If you or someone in your family has a collection of Star photos or newspaper clippings, please look through them and consider sending them to me or scanning them and forwarding them to me. To the extent that you know any details about the photo, please send along that information too. Helpful information includes: date, location, regatta, year taken, who is in the photo, whom the boat(s) belonged to, and who should be credited for the photo.

I look forward to having your relate historical class anecdotes to me. If there are Star sailors in your district whom you think should be interviewed for the book, please send me a note and contact information if you can.

A quick story – I was doing a little work on the Transpac last week. A colleague said as he picked up the phone, “Oh, by the way, there is some Star stuff on the table, feel free to look through it.”

Not only were there copies of old logs, Forty Years Among the Stars, and A History of the Star Class, but also there were pamphlets from the fleet, old regatta brochures and a thoroughly documented album of black and white photos. The material was headed for the trash and the 80-year old former Star crew’s wife had second thoughts about putting it in the dumpster. Instead, she made arrangements for the goods to be transferred to the local nautical museum. Thankfully, I was in the right place at the right time. We’ll all benefit, because it’s just the type of Star history and memorabilia that I’m looking for.

I hope to hear from you.
